Why is this medication prescribed?
Fexofenadine is used to relieve hay fever and allergy symptoms, including runny nose, sneezing, and red, itchy, tearing eyes. It is also used to treat symptoms of hives, including itching and rashes.
Fexofenadine is in a class of medications called antihistamines. It works by blocking histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms. Fexofenadine and other second-generation antihistamines do not readily enter the brain from the blood, and, therefore, they cause less drowsiness.
It was developed as a successor of and alternative to terfenadine, an antihistamine with potentially fatal contraindications.
